While not top pair defence material, Marincin sits 3rd on Toronto’s defence depth chart, providing steadier defensive play than Jake Gardiner for a shutdown role.
Marincin must succeed defensively the next 14 games for top minutes consideration next season. Matt Hunwick is back another season while Rielly and Gardiner may improve, along with prospect Victor Loov.
By 2018, today’s prospects become boom or bust. Such busts are replaced via trades and free agency. Marincin is in position for success if he develops as a solid shutdown defensman with 1st pass skills not only for Toronto, but in the NHL. Anything less is replaceable.
